Amid Storms We Arrive, the debut full-length album, finds The Red Well dusting off Charlene, and settling into the band sound once more – accompanied by John Muir (drums), Barry Hughes (bass), and David Keay (keys, guitar). As such, the songs are not afraid to be epic; the screaming solos and sing-a-long refrains of opening three tracks – Disappointing Fruit, Before The Dark and Put In A Good Word For Me - are every bit as ambitious (and loud) as his heroes, Neil Young, Bruce Springsteen, and Isaac Brock (Modest Mouse).
However, the more insular side of The Red Well remains intact too, withSkerryvore’s sparse guitar and fragile vocal reminiscent of Jason Molina (Songs:Ohio and Magnolia Electric Co.), and Down APath’s jaunty melody bringing to mind the pop leanings of fellow Scot, Edwyn Collins.
The result is a powerful, confident debut, that wholeheartedly deserves its place in the Fence Records catalogue.
