After 2010’s release ‘Movement in a Storm’ (Moshi Moshi) James Yuill is back with his third album entitled ‘These Spirits’. Yuill's love of sound can be traced back to his university days where he specialized, naturally, in audio forensics. He lends this super keen attention to detail to ‘These Spirits’ and attributes the formulation of the album partly on ‘spending way too much time in a small studio’.
Unlike many electronic purists, he doesn’t shy away from a complete love of pop; seeing no contradiction in working on remixes through the years for the likes of We Have Band, Post War Years or Tilly & The Wall, whilst providing vocals for dance-floor stalwarts X-Press 2 whilst raving about the songwriting genius of Gary Barlow or Dianne Warren. James’ ear for a great melody is totally apparent on ‘These Spirits’. Whereas on previous albums Yuill’s sound has been that of folk quietly and modestly underpinned by electronics here he unashamedly turns the synths up, channeling the restraint and simple melodies of Chicago house with the radio friendly mechanisms of Hot Chip and New Order.
