Glasgow-based, enigmatic, alt-pop duo Bossy Love - comprising Scottish producer, songwriter and drummer John Baillie Jnr (Dananananakroyd / BABE), and Indonesian/Australian vocalist and songwriter Amandah Wilkinson (Operator Please), released their highly-anticipated, debut, 12-track album, ME + U in November, amidst a storm of critical acclaim. Further developing their style for emotionally candid and confessional, yet anthemic, IDGAF lyrics, atop propulsive, rich, pop production, ME + U was selected by the Guardian in their list of Best Albums 2019, before highlighting Bossy Love a second time; in their list of Amazing Musicians To Watch Out For In 2020: “Me + U is the stuff fantasies are made of… best Scottish pop act since Chvrches.”
Now set for a physical release, ME + U will be available on vinyl on Feb 5th, via rising Glaswegian label Double A-Side Records. In celebration, the band will also be releasing a video for second single Foreign Lover (feat. Gerard Black of BABE). With lyrics including “keep it together”, this single has unofficially become Bossy Love’s nod to anti-Brexit sentiment, and a classic long-distance relationship duet. In a time where people are being segregated geographically, whilst also encouraged to be more closed and polarised in the face of technology, Bossy Love saw the importance in highlighting their own uniquely positive experience. Whilst Wilkinson also had a very personal reason for writing the song.
“Foreign Lover was written when my Danish partner had to move back to Copenhagen in the face of Brexit. I’d just fallen in love and suddenly found myself travelling between Glasgow and Copenhagen to make it work. It’s stressful, frustrating and a huge struggle for us both; we never have any time and are making it work with the little money we have, but it’s this amazing new love, and we know that as long as we have each other, we’ll be okay.” – AMANDAH WILKINSON, BOSSY LOVE
Album title track Me + U led the project in October, as it perfectly encapsulates the raw, bold power of the album. The single was accompanied by an intense, emotional video that became a real talking point, thanks in part to Wilkinson breaking down on camera. Also on the album is The E, co-written by Grammy-winning songwriter Jimmy Harry (Madonna, Pink, Kylie, Kelly Clarkson) which was chosen by the Guardian in their Best Tracks of 2019 list, a new version of Bossy Love’s debut release Want Some, which led The Fader to announce “You wish you were best friends with Bossy Love”, and Girlfriend, which was written when Wilkinson discovered her new love interest was already taken, after he was tagged in a Facebook photo by his girlfriend. Originally cowritten with Grammy-nominated Kahlid contributor, Carl Dimataga, for The Saturdays, Wilkinson re-discovered the track when writing this album and updated it with a second chapter, Girlfriend II, about coming out of the other side.
“The album ME + U was made with the ethos of cutting through the veneer of that perfect online persona, presenting instead a raw, emotionally open wound, with as few frills as possible. It’s about the cycle of life and death within relationships, both romantic and platonic. It begins with that magical high of developing a crush and the initial honeymoon period; documenting the lust and how it colours everything in your life, as you radiate that incredible feeling that anything is possible with that person by your side. However, when that relationship changes, it can take you, and everything else, down with it. The album tracks the confusion, denial, anger, hurt, sadness, grief, and finally the acceptance of what’s become of your relationship. It’s also linear to the journey of self-discovery; the strength and resistance it takes to rip yourself open to find out who you really are, what you truly want and coming out of that emotional storm a stronger and wiser person.” - BOSSY LOVE
