Boom Bip’s ambitious, expansive third solo album follows his Mercury-nominated Neon Neon adventures alongside Gruff Rhys. Zig Zaj sees the LA-based producer joined by Alex Kapranos, Money Mark, Cate Le Bon, Luke Steele, and members of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Warpaint and Bon Iver for a bristling tour de force.
Marrying post-rock and synthetic sounds, Zig Zaj displays Boom Bip’s impressive range and continuing evolution as a producer. Visceral, attention-grabbing offerings such as the brooding Goodbye Lovers And Friends, menacing, glam rock fuelled Manabozh and frenetic New Order sit comfortably beside more relaxed, atmospheric tracks. Other gems in the treasure chest include ethereal opener All Hands, the bewitching Do As I Do and soaring, Kraftwerk-esque Automation. Boom Bip has enrolled a sterling supporting cast of vocalists: Mike Noyce of Bon Iver, Franz Ferdinand’s Alex Kapranos, Neon Neon cohort Cate Le Bon, frequent Beastie Boys collaborator Money Mark and Sleepy Jackson and Empire Of The Sun frontman Luke Steele. Also, Red Hot Chilli Peppers’ guitarist Josh Klinghoffer contributes taunt riffs and Jenny Lee Lindberg of LA art rock group Warpaint adds bass and vocals. However, half of Zig Zaj is instrumental and, crucially, the album retains a coherent, distinct identity.
Heralded by the late John Peel as a “modern day Captain Beefheart”, Bryan ‘Boom Bip’ Hollon’s early output includes a collaborative album with rapper Doseone and exquisitely crafted solo debut Seed To Sun. Although subsequently labeled as a producer of leftfield electronica and hip-hop, Boom Bip’s second LP, Blue Eyed In The Red Room, charts his step towards live instrumentation and a more organic sound – a journey he continues with Zig Zaj. As Neon Neon, Boom Bip teamed up with Welsh maverick Gruff Rhys for their 80’s inspired, power-pop concept album, Stainless Style. The record was Mercury-nominated, critically adored and Boom Bip’s highest profile release yet.
Zig Zaj will be released on Lex Records and forms part of their ‘Lex10’ tenth anniversary celebrations.
